How dental implants work
All teeth comprise roots and crowns, and dental implants are designed to replace the roots. They are small titanium screws or posts that are placed in your jaw bone during a small surgical procedure.
We appreciate that words such as “surgical” can be daunting, scary even. We also understand that being a nervous or phobic dental patient can often play a major contributory role to tooth loss – when the fear and anxiety of visiting the dentist prevent you from going for routine check-ups until it is too late.
That’s why we offer treatment under conscious sedation . This means you won’t be asleep, so will be able to cooperate with your dentist, but you will be very relaxed, peaceful, and free from anxiety – and, most importantly of all, won’t experience any pain. We also offer the treatment under local anaesthetic, and most people report that it is much more bearable than having a tooth taken out.
Once your dental implants are in place, they will start to integrate with the jaw bone. Some people are suitable for having immediate temporary teeth placed, whilst for others it is best to leave the implant site to heal for a few months – your dentist will discuss the best option for you.
